What is HD Liposuction, and How is it Different?

Author; Gaia Plastic Surgery 2021-05-25

HD liposuction refers to a series of advanced techniques in liposuction that are used to sculpt the body while also enhancing the natural muscles of the trunk and extremities. This procedure is completed using VASER liposuction, which helps to optimize fat removal and skin tightening for amazing results.

This procedure is where the fat is selectively removed to help enhance muscles, such as the six-pack and the obliques. HD liposuction can also be performed on the calves, buttocks, thighs, male chest, upper arms, and lower back or flanks.

Traditional Liposuction vs. HD Liposuction

Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure that used a hollow suction tube inserted through an incision to remove the fat. The scraping motion used to remove the fat from under the skin can be invasive and imprecise. This method is typically used for areas that are excessively full of fat or are otherwise problematic.

With HD liposuction, rather than removing large amounts of fat, HD liposuction is VASER-assisted to selectively remove fat from both superficial and deep adipose tissue layers while leaving fat in other areas to create a sculpted look. VASER utilizes ultrasonic waves that are used to emulsify the fat beneath the skin’s surface. This is done very precisely, so the fat can be removed, and the body can be contoured to create a naturally toned appearance.

What Can I Expect During the HD Liposuction Procedure?

Before beginning the procedure, your doctor will make very detailed anatomical markings on your treatment area/areas to define where the etching, shadowing, and sculpting will be done.

First, VASER is used to emulsify the fat for removal. As the procedure is carried out, some of this fat may be transferred to areas in need of augmentation. This procedure is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia but can also be performed under local anesthesia and light sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure.

Recovery from HD Liposuction

You can expect to experience mild discomfort for a few days after the procedure, and you will likely be up and walking around comfortably within a day or two. You will see your best results within two or three months after recovery. Aftercare for HD liposuction includes:

  • Using specific body compression garments
  • Post-procedure ultrasound
  • Lymphatic massage
  • Hyperbaric oxygen
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise

Am I a Candidate for HD Liposuction?

HD liposuction is a great procedure for generally fit patients whose goal is to remove fat deposits in delicate or stubborn areas of the body where precision and definition are required. If you have a healthy BMI, are at a stable weight or close to your ideal weight, and have little to no excess skin, you may be a candidate for the HD liposuction procedure.
